Hi I’m Dr Georgie…

… and I run Feather Psychology. I’m a Clinical Psychologist and Mum of three. I always wanted to be a child psychologist…and I still am! But early on in my first job in private practice supporting children and young people I found time and time again, that our work was most effective when parent wellbeing was addressed too. This could be through parent coaching, to support parents to respond in helpful ways to their child’s feelings and behaviour, or taking time to step back and process a own parenting journey, reconnecting with the parent that they want to be, and making space for the times that they had acted in ways that they wished they hadn’t. Since then, I have focused on supporting the wellbeing of parents who have a child with a disability, a medical condition, or following an unexpected illness, at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, as well as the Ronald McDonald House charity nationwide. I have had the privilege of sitting with hundreds of parents, as they bravely share their journey, in the service of showing up each day to be the parent they aspire to be.

My own parenting journey has been far from straightforward. Throughout those early days in my career supporting parents I became a parent myself. Traditional parenting methods just didn’t seem to work for my child, leaving me feeling down on myself, burnt out and alone. I had to learn how to step back and really look at what was important to me, so that I could be there for my child and growing family. Sometimes this has meant bucking the trend and doing things differently to others, holding closely to my heart what I feel works best for us. These experiences inform my work in ways I feel grateful for everyday, as I learn alongside families.

This is at the heart of Feather Psychology’s mission; supporting families to find a way through the world that works for them, using evidence-based methods, grounded in compassion, acceptance and flexibility, keeping it simple where possible, going deeper when needed.
